The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards brought together the hottest names in music and they rocked the house. Heidi Klum and Taylor Swift set the red carpet on fire with their gold mini-dresses while Pink was chic in a long dress with a laser cut leather bodice.
Bieber Fever was at an all-time high as the young star proved that he was more than just a one trick pony. His celebrated break-up with girlfriend Selena Gomez had the critics buzzing before he even arrived and when he did, with his mother on his arm, it proved he is very confident with who he is both as a star and a person. He was the big winner of the night. Justin’s wins included the show’s top award, Artist of the Year. His brought his mom, Pattie Mallette, onstage with him as he collected his award. He beat out some stiff competition for the award from Rihanna, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Drake.
Carly Rae Jepson won the award for New Artist of the Year. Her song Call Me Maybe has been a runaway hit.
In the Pop/Rock category, Katy Parry won Favorite Female Artist, Maroon 5 won for Favorite Band, Duo or Group and Justin Bieber for Favorite Male Artist and Justin again for Favorite Album for Believe. In his acceptance speech he addressed the naysayers who thought he would never last. “I want to say this is for all the haters who thought I was just here for one or two years. I feel like I’m going to be here for a very long time,” he said.
In the Country and Western category Carrie Underwood won Favorite Album for Blown Away, Lady Antebellum took the Favorite Band, Duo or Group Award, Luke Bryan won for Favorite Male Artist and Taylor Swift for the 5th time in a row was named Favorite Female artist. In her acceptance speech, she said “This is unreal. I want to thank the fans. You guys are the ones who voted on this.”
Nicki Minaj won two awards in the Rap/Hip Hop category, Favorite Album for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and for Favorite Artist.
In the Soul/R&B category Usher won Favorite Male Artist, Beyonce; was named Favorite Female Artist and Rihanna won for Favorite Album for Talk that Talk
Other winners include Adele for Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, Shakira for Favorite Latin Music Artist, Linkin Park for Favorite Alternative Rock Artist and tobyMac for Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist.
In addition to the awards, there were several memorable performances at the award show including Psy and MC Hammer doing a dance medley Gangnam Style which had the audience on its feet joining in. Unlike many other award shows, the AMA winners are chosen by their fans and it seems they have spoken loud and clear when it comes to who are their favorites.
