Who needs an Abdomen Treatment?

A lump can be a swelling or bulge of tissue that is either hard or soft. A lump in the abdomen can be present in any part of the abdomen, from the bottom of the ribs to the pelvic bone. The lump can be rigid or can move around when touched.

There are many reasons for a lump to appear in the abdomen. One of the most common reasons for the lump could be due to a hernia. There are many types of hernia. Listed below are a three that will result in a lump that is noticeable.

  • Inguinal hernia: This type of a hernia occurs because of a weak abdominal wall. Any soft tissue such as the intestine will poke through this weakness causing a lump. You will also feel pain when coughing or bending or when lifting an object. This type of hernia is not dangerous but will need surgical attention in order to be rectified as it could result in blood supply being cut off to the intestine.
  • Umbilical hernia: This type of a hernia is very similar to an inguinal hernia but is localised to the naval area. This hernia is very common in children and usually rectifies itself by the abdominal wall healing itself. However, if the hernia persists beyond three years of age, then surgical intervention will be necessary.
  • Incisional hernia: This type of a hernia occurs due to an incision made in the abdomen region due to a previous surgery. The incision will make the abdominal wall weak at that point and result in a hernia. This type of a hernia will need surgical attention in order to rectify it.

Apart from a hernia, there are many other reasons for a lump to appear in the abdomen. Some of these reasons or causes include:

  • A hematoma occurs when blood vessels break under the skin to create a lump that is blood from the broken vessels. Usually, the hematoma will correct itself as the body heals from the injury to the blood vessels.
  • Lipoma is a lump made from the fat under the skin. This lump grows slowly and feels rubbery and firm. A lipoma bulge can be removed surgically but is unnecessary.
  • In the foetal stage, the testes are formed in the abdomen and then descend into the scrotum. Sometimes, one testicle will not descend and will cause a lump in newborn boys. This can be corrected either through hormone therapy or surgically.
  • In rare cases, a tumour of the abdomen, skin or muscles will appear that is noticeable. This tumour can be either benign or malignant. The treatment of a tumour will depend entirely on what type it is and the plan your doctor will have for the abdominal cancer treatment.
