Shoes, glorious shoes, a woman just can’t have enough of them. Who would have thought your shoes make a statement about your personality? A study was done at the University of Kansas and published in Journal of Research in Personality in June 2012 and it came to some questionable conclusions about what your shoes say about you.
In the study, participants, who were students, provided photographs of their shoes and completed self-assessment reports. They were asked to define their personality, whether or not they were liberal or conservative and in relationships were they distant or clingy. Coders, who were also students, then looked at the photos and gave them a rating based on various dimensions. The results were found to be quite accurate at determining personality traits of the participants.
A second group of students then evaluated the photos to determine the age, gender, income and attachment anxiety of the people who were wearing the shoes with nothing to go on but the photos. They also had very accurate results. It would seem that when it comes to shoes, at least in this study, footwear says a lot about your personality.
Among the study’s conclusions:
Ankle boots are indicative of an aggressive personality.
Expensive shoes mean the person is wealthy
Colorful or flashy shoes are signs of an extrovert.
People who wear comfortable or practical shoes are agreeable.
If you take good care of your shoes you have attachment issues and boring shoes mean relationship issues.
While the results are interesting, it is certainly a small study among a very specific slice of the population. When you consider the things that they are saying and compare it to the general population, it is quite amusing.
Consider the very fashionable ankle boot. They are regularly worn by women of all ages and incomes. One hardly thinks of Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Hilary Duff as aggressive and yet the fashion magazines and the Internet is awash with these very fashion-conscious women in ankle boots.
When it comes to expensive shoes meaning that someone is wealthy, have these students never heard of TJMaxx? Today’s fashionable woman can have expensive shoes and not be anywhere near wealthy.
Comfortable shoes, well they are just that, comfortable and when it comes to the weekend, it has nothing at all to do with agreeableness and everything to do with comfort. Depending on where you are going and what you are doing, comfortable shoes are a practical choice that has nothing to do with whether you are agreeable or not.
With the amazing number of great flats that are being offered, it is no wonder many people have happy and very stylish feet. As for their personality, flats are indicative of good sense both in fashion and in life.
What shoes do say about your personality is whether or not you are someone who wants to be on the cutting edge of fashion or whether practicality is more important. Many introverted people express their fashion sense with a colorful or flashy pair of shoes.
Shoes make a statement without the owner saying a word. So the next time you slip on a pair of flip-flops, think: what does it say about your personality?
