The Benefits of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is considered a type of complementary or alternative-health science, which uses herbs to help both your psychological and physiological being.

The pure essence of herbs and plants are used to make essential oils, the smell of these essential oils can help to alleviate the symptoms of many diseases and symptoms such as obesity, arthritis, pain, dementia, cancer and stress.

It is very important to remember that not all scents or fragrances are beneficial in this way, and do not count as aromatherapy. For an oil to be considered as an essential aromatherapy oil, with the accompanying health benefits, it must be a natural oil that has no synthetic additives or artificial ingredients used in them.

The power of the essential oils used in aromatherapy can only have healing powers if they are true essential oils. The essential oils that are used in aromatherapy are of the highest concentration and should always be diluted before applying directly to the skin. There are a few exceptions to this rule and a qualified aromatherapist would be able to tell you which oils can be used safely. There are several essential oils that can be blended together to create a ‘super oil’ called synergy. The combination of these oils has the potential to make them more effective than just one individual oil. The effects of an essential oil can be diluted by mixing them with a carrier oil to make them less strong, and safe to be used directly on the skin.

Richard Carlson PhD, said that ‘wholeness or health’ is our natural state. ‘The nature of healing involves removing obstructions to this natural state and bringing individuals into alignment with themselves and their world. Free of these obstructions, an individual’s innate intelligence and self-regulating capabilities will guide him toward a state of well-being’ – This could have been written specifically about aromatherapy.

The scent of essential oils has the power to transform our emotions and to even heal our bodies. Not only this, but essential oils have the power to elevate our state of mind to a higher plane. Aromatherapy should be researched and used under the strict guidance of someone who has been trained in the science of it, and you should always stop any treatments if you become unwell.

Never allow essential oils to touch your bare skin unless you have researched and discovered it’s harmless to the touch. The majority of essential oils will severely irritate the skin and should almost always be used via a carrier oil or other method.
