Quotes can inspire us to reach for the stars, to go beyond what we think is possible, to dream the “impossible dream”. I often use quotes in my writing, and here are a few of my favorites from famous people and some not-so-famous.
“You see things; and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?’” – George Bernard Shaw. This one I think, is a very famous quote, but not because of George Bernard Shaw. Edward Kennedy used it in his eulogy at his brother Robert’s funeral. That quote inspired a new generation to look at life in a different way.
“Always do right – this will gratify some and astonish the rest.” – Mark Twain. This is one quote I tend to live by. I am always astonished when I tell the clerk at the grocery store that they have undercharged me and they look at me baffled. They can’t believe that I would tell them when the advantage is on my side. “Why not,” I tell them, I will also tell you when you overcharge me. Honesty is a two-way street.
“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer; it sings because it has a song.” – Maya Angelou
All of us have a song and we need to find that song and sing it to the rafters. These songs are what make us individuals.
“It’s really a wonder that I haven’t dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.” – Anne Frank
This quote is especially inspiring when you consider that it is from Anne’s time in Amsterdam, when every day should have hardened her to the goodness of her fellow man. That she can look beyond that is an inspiration to us all.
“Keep in mind that neither success nor failure is ever final.” – Roger Ward Babson This is a lesson that is often the hardest to learn, whether you are dealing with success or failure. Both can change us in ways we never expect.
“Better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness.” – Chinese Proverb
“It’s a very funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” – William Somerset Maugham
“You gain strength, experience and confidence by every experience where you really stop to look fear in the face…You must do the thing you cannot do.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
“Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success.” – Dr. Joyce Brothers Have you ever heard of a self fulfilling prophecy. You are what you think we are, you achieve what you believe you can achieve. Think positive thoughts and positive things begin to happen.
“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.” – Elizabeth Kubler Ross
“An aim in life is the only fortune worth the finding; and it is not to be found in foreign lands, but in the heart itself.” – Robert Louis Stevenson
“I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” – Thomas Jefferson In reality we make our own luck with our determination and hard work.
“Success is counted sweetest by those who ne’er succeed.” – Emily Dickinson
“Inspiration and genius – one and the same.” – Victor Hugo
“Every artist was first an amateur.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson This is one of the hardest one to accept. It is so hard when we are beginning and struggling to realize that one day we will be the wise and successful ones.
“Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.” – Albert Einstein
“A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s heaven for?” – Robert Browning
“One’s best success comes after their greatest disappointments.” – Henry Ward Beecher
“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” – Helen Keller
“Dignity does not consist in possessing honors, but in deserving them.” – Aristotle
“Nothing is too high for a man to reach, but he must climb with care and confidence.” – Hans Christian Andersen
“I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” – Thomas Alva Edison
“If your determination is fixed, I do not counsel you to despair. Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance.” – Samuel Johnson This is one of my favorites, with hard work nothing is impossible.
If you are in need of inspiration, quotes can inspire us to look above and beyond ourselves. Think big, dream big, believe in yourself and nothing is impossible.
