“Piglets” – Cute Doughnuts Made at Home

– Vegan Recipe –

gogosi pudrate If you’re craving for something sweet, “piglets” are a great and inexpensive treat enjoyed by children and adults alike. These doughnuts are smaller – something between a Tim Hortons doughnut and a Timbit.I know the recipe from my grandma, who liked to call them “piglets” because of their uneven shape. So don’t try to make them perfectly equal; the odder the shape, the more fun they will look! And trust me, they taste amazing, especially when they’re fresh. Savor them sprinkled with icing sugar, jam, honey or maple syrup.

Ingredients
  1. ¾ cups water or milk (take almond or soy milk for vegan recipe)
  2. ¼ cup vegetable oil (I use sunflower oil)
  3. ¼ cup sugar
  4. 1 sachet (16 g) vanilla sugar or ½ tsp vanilla extract – optional, but recommended
  5. 2 cups of flour (I mix 1 cup all-purpose and 1 cup whole wheat)
  6. 1 tsp granulated yeast
Instructions
  1. Step 1: add the ingredients in the indicated order to the bread machine pan, set the machine on “dough” and turn it on. The dough will be done in about 1 ½ hours.
  2. Step 2: when the dough is done, turn on the oven for 3 minutes to make a warm environment where the doughnuts can rise. Turn off the oven (you need it to be warm, not hot).
  3. Step 3: place dough on a well flowered surface and knead for a minute or two to squish out the air bubbles that may have formed. Sprinkle more flour as necessary so the dough doesn’t stick to your hands.
  4. Step 4: form the dough into a long roll of about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, and cut it in ½ inches thick slices – it doesn’t have to be super-exact.
  5. Step 5: arrange the slices on the cutting board or on a pan and place them in the warm oven for 30 to 45 minutes. They are ready to fry when they have risen to about double size.
  6. Step 6: in a deep pan, preheat enough oil so the “piglets” can float comfortably while baking. When the oil is hot enough, place two – three doughnuts in the pan, one at a time (do not overcrowd the pan), and let them fry at medium-high until golden on one side, then turn and let them fry on the other side. Leave the other doughnuts in the warm oven.
  7. When a batch of doughnuts is done, take them out and place them on a rack (preferred) or a paper towel to allow the excess oil drip off. Continue until all doughnuts are baked.
  8. Sprinkle with icing sugar and enjoy!
