Hundreds of millions of people include visiting Facebook as a daily part of their daily routine. Facebook  officially cites their membership of over 1 billion members. With this level of membership, that is a lot of action happening every day on the network.

And why not? With all the activities the Facebook platform has to offer, there are a lot of good reasons to be a member. However, while these advantages are many, it should not go unnoticed that there is also a negative side of Facebook as well.

Users that take the time to learn the darker aspects of Facebook are better equipped to maximize the good stuff and enjoy what Facebook has to offer.

The negative side to Facebook includes:

Privacy loss risks

Privacy settings help (as confusing as they can be on this network!), but even using these settings do not guarantee complete privacy. Nothing is infallible. Always use caution on what information you share online.

Malware and scams

It is frequent to hear about various Facebook scams. Many scams are rogue applications designed to look like legitimate Facebook features, but actually cause damage to your computer, compromise accounts, attempt to financially defraud or steal one’s identity. Due to its vast size Facebook is often targeted by hackers/scammers.

Predators

Being online makes anyone a potential target, however, Facebook is probably the network most predators turn to. Any information put out there on the network should be done with caution. While many people are honest, unfortunately some are not.

The negative side to Facebook includes:

Privacy loss risks

Privacy settings help (as confusing as they can be on this network!), but even using these settings do not guarantee complete privacy. While privacy settings are a plus, there have been glitches that cause the settings to be removed. It’s happened to me. One day a few years back I was surprised to learn a photo album I had marked as private was opened to the entire web population.

Due to its vast size, Facebook is often targeted by hackers and scammers. With such a large online population, payoff can be huge.

Predators

Being online makes anyone a potential target, however, Facebook is probably the network a good percentage of predators turn to. Any information put out there on the network should be done with caution. While many people are honest, unfortunately some are not.

Time consuming

Facebook, with all its features, can quickly eat up time which can take away from other areas of life.  It is easy to log onto the network to check messages and suddenly find several hours go by.

Professional risks

One of the other potential negative effects related to the social network is the professional risks taken. While you can set your profile to private and be careful with what you post, unfortunately you can’t control what your Facebook connections say and do. There are many ways Facebook can negatively impact a career, even for those users who are vigilant about their activities on the website.

Relationship problems

Sharing too much information about any relationship, including those with family, friendships or colleagues, can lead to trouble. Posting thoughts about people or sharing conflicts on Facebook is like broadcasting them on the radio, tons of people can hear all about it.

Negative Side of Facebook

There are many pros and cons associated with Facebook use, however by recognizing the drawbacks and making a concentrated effort to diminish those issues can help positively enhance the Facebook experience. And in all fairness, most, if not all, of these issues happen on other websites too, it’s just Facebook is the most widely used, so any negative effects tend to have the biggest impact. With the above points addressed and minimized, it is a lot easier to enjoy the positive aspects of membership.
