Janis Ian has taken to her facebook page to tell about her encounter with Bill Cosby and it’s not what you would assume.
The nine-time Grammy-winning, singer-songwriter took to her facebook page to tell how Cosby had her black-balled in Hollywood at the tender age of 16. In 1966, Ian was out promoting her hit single, “Society’s Child.” She was away from home for a great length of time with the only familiar face, her female chaperone, that she referred to as an “Earth-motherly” type. Ian had been invited to play her hitsong on “The Smothers Brothers.” While awaiting to take the stage Ian succumbed to exhaustion, and fell asleep in her chaperones lap.
The show went on, Ian had a blast, and all seemed well until she got called into her agent’s office a short time later. “What happened on the “Smother Brothers Show?” She was told no one wanted to book her for appearances. When she asked why she was told, “…that Cosby, seeing me asleep in my chaperone’s lap, had made it his business to ‘warn’ other shows that I wasn’t ‘suitable family entertainment,’ was probably a lesbian, and shouldn’t be on telelvision.”
Thankfully, Johnny Carson lived by his own rules and invited Ian to appear on his show, thus her career recieved a new breath of fresh air.
Ian decided to speak out all these decades later, after seeing the New York magazine’s article about Cosby’s alleged drugging and raping of dozens of women over nearly four decades. “There’s a lot to bother a sensible person about this.”
