When a woman enters menopause, her body loses the ability to produce adequate quantities of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. The side effects of this include the irregular periods, depression, and hot sweats or flashes associated with going through the menopause.

In the past women were placed on Hormone Replacement Therapy to alleviate these symptoms but it proved to have negative health consequences. It is possible to gain considerable relief by taking vitamin supplements.

Eating a healthy diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables can usually supply all the nutrients our bodies need. However, during certain times in our lives our bodies are under more stress than usual and may lack essential vitamins, so taking supplements may be necessary to maintain optimum health during these periods.

Here is a list of some of the most useful menopause vitamins and how they can relieve the symptoms of menopause as well as help prevent disease–

Vitamin A

Deficiency of vitamin A can lead to an increased susceptibility to infection, and can cause heavy menstrual bleeding.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps the body heal wounds and maintain collagen levels. It also helps to strengthen the immune system, which can become weaker during the menopause. Vitamin C will help to reduce hot sweats and flashes, and reduce risk of vaginal dryness.

B Vitamins

Deficiencies of Vitamin B6 may be associated with the development of osteoarthritis. Women taking Hormone Replacement Therapy can be at risk of becoming deficient. Deficiencies of the B vitamins can also cause irritability, anxiety, and poor concentration.

Vitamin D

As vitamin D is responsible for maintenance of bone mass, a deficiency could lead to an increased risk of developing osteoporosis. Whilst true vitamin D deficiency is quite rare, it is important for menopausal women to receive adequate amounts to help maintain healthy bone mass.

Vitamin E

This has been used as an estrogen substitute as it is thought to have chemical properties similar to estrogen. It can help to reduce hot sweats and flashes and vaginal dryness.


This activates vitamin D and can help to prevent osteoporosis. Magnesium; this can help to prevent the mood swings and breast tissue tenderness associated with both periods and the menopause. It is thought to limit weight gain and relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.


Calcium is essential for helping the body maintain a healthy bone structure, and a deficiency can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis.

Supplements of some of the above vitamins have been proven to help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with the menopause.

However, if you feel that you should be taking any menopause vitamins, it is a good idea to discuss this with your doctor in the first instance, as overdosing on some vitamins can actually cause health problems.
