How to Survive and Thrive Through Career Change

Most real people don’t wake up one morning and decide it is time for a career change. Most often there is a precipitating event that results in the decision to change careers. That event can take many forms but in this day and age, it is often downsizing. One day you have a successful career and the next you are unemployed and need to find a new job. The question is, how to survive and thrive through a career change?

In days past when your employer no longer had need of your services or vice versa, you just went to another company in the same career area. You would move up with each move and this is how you built up your resume and your importance in the field.

These days, however, with most companies cutting down on full-time employees, chances are if you have lost your job through downsizing, there is a very good chance that you may not be able to find a job within the industry that you are now working. Jobs are quite scarce in some fields and it may be that the training you have and the experience will not help you to find a job in a market that may be glutted with people with the same qualifications that you have.

Depending on your age and your financial situation, it may be time to think about a career change. This can involve going back to school to get a Master’s Degree or it may be to get the credits you need for a degree in a totally different area than where you formerly worked. There are some industries that are actually growing in spite of the economy.

amazonIf you are considering a successful change of career it is important that you check before you invest a lot of time and energy in making that change whether or not there are jobs available in the field you are considering. Public Relation is a field that is projected to grow 24 percent in the next ten years according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is a field with great potential to find a new career.

If however, you are not a young employee and are financially stable and able to make a career change because you are bored or have accomplished as much as you can in your current career then it may be time to follow your dream. It can be the career you always dreamed of following before life got in the way or it may be a hobby that you would like to turn into a new career opportunity. This can be one of the most satisfying and successful changes of careers.

Real people decide to change their career path every day. If can be a very hard decision to make or it can seem like the most natural thing in the world. You just have to commit to making the change and jump right in and most of all be determined to find success.
