How To Shape Your Own Style: Fashion Insights From Allison Harvard And Tim Yap

I was always fascinated with people who know who they are and know how they want to look. Surprisingly, only from these two icons I had found the right word that exactly describes what those people have: style.

Allison Harvard is America’s Next Top Model Cycle 12 and Cycle 17 runner-up. Aside from being a runway model, she’s also a brand endorser, a painter and a photographer. She had her artwork featured in the novel ‘The Story Told at Night’ by Lisa Kuznetsova.

  • Be comfortable in what you’re wearing. – When you’re on your own, the most important thing is to make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing because if you feel not confident, all you wanna do is to get out of it.
  • Wear wigs. – Allison said she has 500 wigs. She even wants to change her hair color to light blue.Wigs are the best and easy way to change your look. It’s fun and it’s cool. You don’t have to spend so much time to get your hair done and it allows you to play with colors.

If somebody asked you why, Allison said, “You tell them, why not? Have fun. You can’t lose. You can’t lose.”

  • Have an imagination. – Have an imagination of what you’re wearing. And feel comfortable in doing it. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try.
  • Trust yourself. – People will see your real worth. Just wear it and everything else will follow.

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment and choose a mentor. – Open your mind. It is never too late to reinvent yourself. And pick an expert that will influence your fashion choice. But don’t steal.
  • Make your own reality show. – People are watching you all the time. So put a reality show while you’re at it.
  • Visualize your look. – Tim said when he was a kid and until now, he would cut out pieces from magazines and he’ll put his 1×1 picture there. So he gets to see what kind of look he would come up with. “After you visualize it, you’ll be it.” He observed.
  • Always have the best attitude. – He pointed out, “What is inside will reflect outside. Even if you’re wearing the most expensive clothes, but if inside, you’re not happy, it will show.” So be great inside to be great outside.
  • Don’t be afraid of colors. – We were always drawn of black and white colors. They look good but there are other colors and prints too.
  • Don’t just follow trends. – We are in a generation that there are no rules anymore. Follow your own rules. Tim remarked that fashion trends are just a guide. It doesn’t mean you have to follow that.
  • Don’t just copy. – We look up to fashion models, bloggers and magazines as icons but not for us to copy for something else or for someone else. Tim added, “It’s not just being in style, it’s about being the real version of you.”
  • Don’t be afraid of what bullies and bashers have to say. – If they don’t want what you’re wearing, it’s their problem.
  • Experiment, don’t expect. – Most of the time, we were so used to thinking what we were presumed to wear, for instance, what we have to wear at work. We were influenced by people. It’s gonna be too tiring if you have to impressed everybody. Dress how you feel.

Look around and you’ll see many professionals who know the word “style” but do not know how to fit it in their own persona. Tell me, have you formed your own style?
