Taro is also known as “Yam” in Malaysia or “Keladi” in Malay language.
It is a tropical plant with root that is grown underground, especially in tropical countries.
There are various type of taro available in the market; ranging from green, purple and white internal hard tuber.
Regardless of color, taro is a highly starchy food, full of carbohydrates and a good source of energy.
Hence, Taro is good for you, helps to generate energy and strength.

Why peeling taro makes my hand itchy?
When peeling the outer layer rough skin of a taro, it will produce a layer of sticky white juice that appears on the hard tuber.
This white liquid makes your skin feel itchy due to the alkaline base substance called oxalate in it.
However, it does not harm your skin at all, as long as you wash it away with running tap water.

What You Should NOT Do With Taro
Do not eat raw taro as it is mildly toxic and taste pungent that you may throw up.
Raw taro should not be eaten as it will irritates the throat due to the oxalate substance contain in it. It will cause itchy throat and rashes to your skin.
Do not over eat cooked taro because it will cause your stomach indigestion as it is high in carbohydrates. Taro takes a longer time to break down into glucose.
Hence, taro might disrupt the rest of he stomach and spleen normal functions in your body system.

Lymphadenitis is a viral infection that causes swelling of lymph nodes after a high fever or weak body resistance that may turn into scrofula disease if not treated early.
If the swelling is detected at an early stage, rub the taro skin onto the swelling areas to reduce lymphadenitis.
The patient will experience awfully itchy feeling due to the alkaline substance that brushes against the swollen skin.
Bear with the itch until it recovers.
If the swelling of lymphadenitis had appeared several days ago, rub the taro skin on the swollen area and consume cooked taro with kelp sweet soup to relieve the pain.
As for those weak patients who are experiencing lack of appetite, drink a bowl of sweet soup mix with Bei Qi, 10 red dates and 5 slices of taro to satisfy hunger and provide the patient some energy too.

Scrofula is a tuberculous disease in which there are swellings at certain glands in the neck.
This is the chronic stage of lymphadenitis which has not been cured.
Normally, scrofula patients are extremely weak, lack of appetite and feeling terrible, uncomfortable of the swelling part at the neck.
When it is not treated early, it may spread to the patient’s chest and armpits.
In order to cure scrofula, cook warm congee or boil sweet soup with small slices of taro that helps to heal scrofula gradually and enhance the patient’s mood in eating food.

How to cook taro
Taro is usually boil as sweet soup such as bubur cha cha or sweet dessert soup with screwpine leaves also known as Pandan leaves( above photo shown )
Weak patients who are facing lack of appetite could try eating congee with chopped taro to satisfy hunger pangs and provide some strength in the body as it is a good source of energy.
In china, Taro paste is a hit dessert recipe mainly in Chaozhou province. The taro is boiled with sugar and mashed into fine paste.
Stewed duck and Fish Head Pot with Taro are some of the popular dishes served as dinner in restaurant and family feast or gathering.
