Any career in the medical field is a good choice these days since there is such a huge demand for health care professionals but if you’re not sure if working directly with people is the best job for you there are other options.  For example, the medical industry needs people to handle the paperwork, the organizational aspects, and things like that.  While you may have less contact with patients, the job is still very important and the people who are trained as medical assistants can work their way up while enjoying a larger scale of job security than that seen in other professions.  The support staff, such as medical assistants, is a critical part of our health care industry.

Basics You Should Know About Being a Medical Assistant

Before you consider this job field, you should have a basic idea of what a medical assistant does and what the job entails.

Primarily, medical assistants are responsible for coordinating activities, planning, directing, and sometimes supervising services. They can work at in various types of health care facilities.  They may work in a physician’s office (include those that have several physicians in the same building), in clinics, or in other health care facilities.

  1. Hospital Administrators

As a hospital administrator, you would be expected to keep records updated and maintain them regularly, do schedules, maintain budgets and monitor them, and track inventory.  You may not be able to start as a hospital administrator but you can work towards that once you have an assistant job in a department of a hospital.  Start at the bottom, prove your worth, and work your way up!

  1. Administrators of Clinics

Clinic administrators work within a specific department in a clinic or in a hospital.  They are responsible for implementing policies, monitoring patient care records, creating reports, and monitoring budgets.  A good clinical administrator helps the entire practice run more smoothly and physicians depend on them to keep the office in order.

  1. Administrator at a Nursing Home

As baby boomers age, nursing homes are filling up quickly.  There is a huge demand for healthcare professionals to work at nursing homes and that include medical assistants.  The elderly people that live in these home rely on the staff to make their quality of life as best as it can possibly be.  That means tracking medications, admitting patients, monitoring health care procedures, handling finances and more.  Staff that works in nursing homes must be caring and empathetic, too.

  1. Health Information Managers

Patient files contain a great deal of information and it is critical that they are maintained, updated, and recorded accurately and on a regular basis.  When doctors access the files it needs to be easy to read and organized or the patient’s life could be at risk. If you have a job as a health information manager you will also be responsible to make sure that files are kept confidential.  Various forms of technology are used to do this job so using computer programs and software efficiently is critical.

If any of these jobs are of interest to you, getting the proper education is your first step.  You can get a diploma as a medical assistant to begin.  For some of these careers you many need further education but you can continue your education after you start working in the right field.  Entry level positions give you a good feel for the job and will let you know if it is the right career for you.  Start at the beginning and go from there!
