When it comes to travelling, it can create a lot of waste and be hard on the environment. But with that said, there are many things that you can do to decrease the carbon footprint related to your travels.
Canvas Bags for Shopping
Whether you are shopping or going out for the day, carry bags with you that can be re-used. When you are in the shop, you can tell them that you do not need a bag as you have your own. These can be plastic garbage bags you get when shopping or you can purchase a canvas/fabric bag to reuse. If you are crafty, you can create your own.
Re-Usable Bags for Carrying
If you need to carry things with you for the day, consider using a backpack or reusing your bags again. For instance, if you are somewhere with a pool or a spa, take your towel and other items with you in this bag. You can buy some very nice bags as well so that you are not carrying a bag that embarrasses you.
Depending on where you are, you may find yourself buying drinks in plastic bottles. There are a couple things that you can do with these. If you can refill them somewhere, that is a good option. If you do not want to drink just water, there are many different products that you can use to flavor the water or you can add a bit of lemon or lime for some refreshment. When you no longer want to reuse the bottle, or feel that it needs to be replaced, look for a location that will allow you to recycle it.
If you are travelling somewhere that the water is fine to drink, you may want to invest in a re-usable water bottle instead. It is not recommended that you re-use the plastic bottles that you get water or pop in due to the BPA in them.
For the person who enjoys reading, quite often places will have a place where you can trade your books for different ones. When I travelled and stayed in hostels, they all had book exchanges. I have seen these exchanges in some hotels as well. If you can find a used book store, you may be able to exchange the books you are done for some new ones.
Product Sample Bottles
Have you ever gotten a product sample in the mail – specifically ones for shampoo, conditioner or body lotions? Save these for when you are holidays and save having to take the big bottles with you. These are perfect if you are flying and do not want to take checked luggage as they are small enough to fit in your carryon. You can use them on multiple trips which helps the environment. I wouldn’t recommend mixing products though, if the bottle was hand lotion, you probably want to stick to hand lotion in it. But using a different type of shampoo in a shampoo bottle should not be an issue.
If you are staying in a hotel and going out for meals, get a room with a fridge if possible. This will allow you to take any leftovers back to your hotel for later instead of tossing them out. While you may be wondering how this helps the environment, it is one less meal that has to be cooked the next day which saves resources. It is also product that does not end up in the landfills.
Being environmentally conscious may not be part of your agenda when you are going on the road, but in order to allow others to travel to the same destinations in the future, it is required. Every little bit helps and if every person just did one thing, we would be in a better place.
