Easy Ways to Update Ugly Kitchen Cabinets

A home can be absolutely spotless and filled with gorgeous furnishings and decor, but when kitchen cabinets are ugly, it will not look nearly as good as it could. Old cabinetry detracts from the entire look of the home, especially if the home is going on the market. People want the latest styles, unless they’re looking for a vintage house or a project to complete. There are a number of easy ways to update ugly kitchen cabinets, and without hiring a professional. They do not have to be stripped and sanded either. With the kits and options available these days, homeowners have no excuse for having outdated cupboards.

Replacing Old Knobs are Easy Ways to Update Ugly Kitchen Cabinets

Hardware can significantly date kitchen cabinets. It is possible to guess the decade they were built just by looking at the handles. If the overall finish and design are fine, replace old knobs and handles with something shiny and new. Brand new hardware will draw the eyes away from less desirable finishes and imperfections. Handles and knobs come in all price ranges, colors, designs and styles. It is amazing how new hardware can completely alter the look of old cabinetry within a matter of minutes. Old handles and knobs provide easy ways to update ugly kitchen cabinets. Replacement could not get any easier, and the choices are endless. However, brick and mortar stores will drastically limit your options. Search online instead. You will find just about any subject or style imaginable.

Add Hand-Carved Wooden Onlays

You have likely heard of inlays. They are carved into wood. Onlays are the opposite of inlaid designs. They are raised carvings, and they can be added at any time. High-end kitchen cabinets that include fancy details such as raised wooden onlays or inlays can cost a small fortune. When looking for easy ways to update ugly kitchen cabinets, onlays are a phenomenal solution. The peel-and-stick variety make it incredibly simple, but I would advise using extra adhesive. Gorilla Glue for wood is ideal. The floral onlays pictured to the left are highly detailed and reasonably priced. They would look lovely on cabinets in a kitchen with cottage style or in a traditional floral theme.

In any case, taking proper measurements is also extremely important when adding onlays. When placed just a few millimeters off, the mistake will definitely show. Consider Wood Specialties Embossed Onlays to update your ugly kitchen cabinets. You will discover many different styles and sizes, and they are ready to paint or stain and attach. They are absolutely gorgeous on cabinet doors, and they will greatly change their overall appearance.

Consider Cabinet Transformations

If simply replacing the hardware or adding beautiful carved onlays will not improve outdated cupboards, consider a cabinet transformation. It is vastly different than advertised refacing services. Refacing is very expensive, and you might as well buy all new cabinets. You can give them a whole new look with an affordable facelift kit. Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations is by far the best kit for refinishing kitchen cabinetry. A couple of my friends have used it, and it does not take special skills. Just be sure to use top-quality brushes to achieve the best possible finish.

The small kit covers 100 square feet or 40 linear feet. In a small to average kitchen, one kit is usually enough. Simply measure the length and width of the surfaces to be covered, and determine how many kits it will take. It definitely beats the cost of cabinet replacement. Take your time, and you will be very pleased with the results.

Does Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Really Work?

My best friend Allison used Cabinet Transformations on her 1970’s kitchen cabinets, and as you can see from the before and after photos below, the results are outstanding. I would not have called her old cabinets ugly, but they were outdated and dark. Although it was not a fast process, it was easy and did not require professional help or training. As the box says, it requires no stripping, sanding or priming. She used lots of elbow grease, but the results were well-worth it.

After seeing the results that my friend achieved, I would use Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations in my home. It can save thousands of dollars over cabinet replacement, and the results can look just as good as or better than new cabinetry. The cabinets of decades past are likely better made than average-priced cabinetry today. As long as your cabinets are solid, it would be wise to keep what you have.

When seeking easy ways to update ugly kitchen cabinets, I highly recommend the kit. I still can’t get over how great my friend’s cabinets look. The results are nothing short of phenomenal. Be sure to take a look at her before and after photos below, and read on to find out what else she did with the remainder of the kit.

Can Cabinet Transformations Be Used for Other Wood Items?

Cabinet Transformations is good for more than just refinishing cabinets. After seeing how great her cabinets turned out, my friend went on a transformation roll. As you can see from the photos below, she also transformed her dark and outdated fireplace mantel. It looks brand new now! The kitchen cabinets are partially visible from the fireplace area, and the well-decorated rustic living room beautifully flows into the dining room/kitchen.

The fireplace is the focal point of the living room, and transforming the mantel from dark to light was a very smart and stylish move. The wood in both rooms match, and it visually flows from one room to the next after continuing wit the mantel. Also, now the mantel is much more visible against the dark stone. Unlike the darker finish, it beautifully pops from the natural facade. Before it disappeared into the stone, but now it looks absolutely amazing!
