Planning a wedding is an exciting time in every bride and groom’s life. The anticipation of saying vows to your loved one in front of family and friends is a very special time. As you plan your wedding the most obvious focus will be on the love you and your intended share and creating your perfect wedding day together. However, it is often easy to get caught up in the planning details and financial considerations which might not always match your budget. In March 2015, CNN reported wedding website “The Knot” reported the average price tag for a wedding was $31,213 in 2014.
If you need to stick within a budget when planning your wedding, it is important to be careful when making purchases. One of the best ways to control your spending is to look to see what kinds of details you can plan and make yourself. Making your own wedding items isn’t just less costly, another benefit is the way it can feel self-gratifying to design and create your own handiwork; this also adds a nice sentimental and personal touch to your wedding.

Here are a few suggestions of do-it-yourself wedding ideas:
Wedding invitations are a great do-it-yourself project to tackle when planning your wedding. Thanks to the innovative software programs on the market, people can easily make their own professional looking invitations. All it takes is a greeting card or other stationary software program, invitation paper and enough ink and you can create beautiful invitations for your guests at a fraction of the cost. You can even run labels off by entering all your guests’ address information in Microsoft Access or Excel; there is an option in there that allows labels to further enhance the look of your homemade invitations.
The labels can be used for the outside invitation, but can also be used for return addresses for the response cards. To add additional flair, if you or a family member or friend is talented and knows how to write calligraphy or other decorative handwriting, this is another nice personal touch that can be added to the envelopes.
Favors for Guests
Wedding favors are another item that can be handmade and look as pretty, if not prettier, than ones you’d purchase at a wedding shop or stationary store. Take a browse through any good craft store and let your imagination take you away. Think glass votives, candles, candy, small vases, or inexpensive ceramic pieces. Add some decorative ribbon, silk flowers or other decorative niceties and you can custom create your own beautiful wedding favors. The possibilities are endless.

Bridal accessories are other great do-it-yourself items to make. A craft store is not only a goldmine for wedding favors, there are tons of great accessories and decorative items you can purchase to create beautiful bridal accessories.
For the bride’s hair, veils can be made with relative ease. For the rest of the bridal party, combs or other hairpieces be decorated. The bride’s purse can either be made if you are handy with a sewing machine, or if not, you can purchase an inexpensive purse and sew/glue decorations on yourself to create a simple, yet elegant, purse.
Even jewelry can be designed. While it’s true that jewelry purchased at the bridal shop is often pretty expensive, many of these are typically simple strands stringed with sequins and delicate beads. If you are nimble with your fingers you might want to consider making some of your own jewelry instead of paying top dollar at the bridal shop.
Table centerpieces can be made as fancy or simple as you’d like. You can either go to most grocery stores as they often sell beautiful, but inexpensive bunches of flowers (many are 3 for $10) and then purchase simple glass vases and fill with water, or you can simply fill with silk flowers and place a few decorative stones to weigh down the vase.
Flowers are a great option and the easiest do-it-yourself idea, however there are many great other easy centerpiece ideas to consider that you can make yourself. In addition to the above do-it-yourself wedding ideas, you can also consider decorations of the reception location and the church (or other place where the wedding will take place). Ribbons, bows silk flowers and other decorative pieces are nice additions and are fairly simple to construct.
There are numerous ways you can take an active role and do-it-yourself in the planning of your wedding. Just let your mind wander and let your creative juices flow and you’ll probably surprise yourself at the creative things you think of making.
