Childhood Memories

I remember when I was a kid one of the things I enjoyed was watching animated movies. I liked especially Disney animated films. Disney films are such classics anyone could recognize them. I grew up with The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty and many others.

Now it’s the 21st century and a lot has changed with Disney’s animation films. But some things will be always the same.

Disney’s Trademark

Disney’s animation films improved a lot with the help of technology. Its trademarks remain unchanged throughout the years.

  1. The songs. The songs are what make it a Disney film. Disney have such amazing composers and musical team. Their songs have beautiful messages. The melody is beautiful and easy to follow. Disney songs always left me speechless.
  2. The themes are also a Disney trademark. Its themes are diverse. It addresses different issues such as finding your place, fulfilling your dreams and many others. The themes make the films suitable for everyone. It is not only for kids but also adults because anyone can relate from it.
  3. The animation is top notch. Whether it be a 2D or 3D animation, it is absolutely amazing. The graphics are so vivid that they seem to be real.

Disney’s Concept of “True Love”

Have you ever heard of “true love’s kiss”? Do you actually believe in it? True love is a concept that is hard to discuss. Its definition varies from person to person so it has no definite definition.

Before, Disney’s interpretation of true love before was simple. The prince and princess fall in love at first sight, get married and live happily ever after. It is unbelievable right? For a fairytale, it’s quite a stretch to fall in love that quickly.

Now in the 21st century, Disney’s animations are quite different. It is much more believable. One notable scene that shows their view of true love is different now is from the infamous animation film, Frozen. Frozen is Disney’s film adaptation of Han Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen It is when Anna asked her sister’s blessing for her marriage with Prince Hans. He only met the man that day. Elsa said and I quote, “Anna, what do you know about love?”. This simple statement changed everything about our earlier conception of Disney animation films.

Another good example is the film Maleficent. Maleficent is the main villain in the fairytale, The Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent cast a spell on Aurora that can only be broken by a true love’s kiss. In the animated film, Aurora’s spell was broken by a prince who once met Aurora but they had no real interaction. In the live action movie, it was Maleficent who broke the spell. It showed that true love is found not only in the opposite sex. It can also be found in other forms like a mother’s love for her child as shown in the film.

Going back to Frozen, the kind of love shown here is the love of the sisters for each other. Anna’s heart was frozen by her sister and an act of true love can thaw her heart. The act that thaws her heart is when she saved sister from harm. It was then when Anna realized what love is.

Now, we can expect a lot more heroine who doesn’t wait for her prince in the future. Surely the list of the Disney’s animated classics will get longer.
