Celebrities Whose Arrest Records May Come as a Surprise

The arrest in April 2013 of America’s sweetheart Reese Witherspoon for disorderly conduct has shocked some of her fans and has gotten her a lot of the kind of publicity that most people prefer not to get. When her husband was arrested for DUI, Reese, who obviously had also been drinking refused to obey the state police officer when he asked her to stay in the car and then pulled the do you know who I am card.

It didn’t keep her from being arrested and she has since apologized to the police and everyone involved for her less than stellar behavior. Her surprising arrest has led to the question, are there other celebrities whose arrest records may come as a surprise?

It is hard to imagine heart throb leading man Hugh Grant being arrested for having sex with a prostitute but that is exactly what happened in 1995. He was discovered in the act in his car on Sunset Boulevard. Not only did it get him charged with a misdemeanor but it cost him his relationship with his then girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley. He has hopefully changed his ways since there have not been anymore run-ins with the law in the last 20 years.

In December of 2012, actor Stephen Baldwin, brother of Alex Baldwin was arrested in New York for tax evasion. Seriously, if the celebrities can’t afford to pay their taxes, what are the rest of the little people supposed to do?

Sally Struthers, who is best known for her role as Archie Bunker’s daughter Gloria on “All in the Family”, was arrested for driving under the influence in September 2012. The actress was playing the role of Roz in the play “9 to 5” at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine. She was driving on route 1 in the area at the time of her arrest.

Heather Locklear, the former Melrose Place actress, was arrested for DUI in 2008. While no alcohol was found in her system, it was determined that she was under the influence of prescription drugs.

Sir Paul McCartney, a vegetarian grandfather, was arrested numerous times for his seeming addiction to marijuana. The most well-known was in 1980 in Japan, but that was just one in a string of pot arrests. He admitted that he loved smoking pot and only gave it up at age 69 for his 8 year old daughter Beatrice.

George Clooney was arrested in March of 2012. His arrest, however, was a badge of honor which he shared with his father who was arrested at the same time as they protested at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, DC. He is one celebrity who can be proud of his arrest record.

Another celebrity who has been arrested on numerous occasions for protesting social injustice is Martin Sheen. As the show “Who Do You Think You Are” showed, he comes from a long line of social activists.

Many other celebrities who have ended up with a police record but most of those  didn’t surprise anyone with their arrest. For many people, celebrity is a curse that leads to problems with the police and abuse of a variety of substances.
