Adobe Photoshop Tutorial- Create Cool Ancient Style Text using Blending Options and Masking

From this tutorial you will learn an easy method to create dark ancient style Text Effect with Blending Options, Texture overlay and Layer Mask. The beautiful Black Castle MF stock Font I have used is created by Rick Mueller and you can download it with many other free fronts from http://www.1001freefonts.com. In Step 6 you can see the link to this particular ancient style Font. I have also applied two textures- one for the Background and one for the text improvement, which are my own photos and unrestricted stock.
You can create this Text Effect with any Photoshop version.

This is the final result:

STEP_25

STEP 1

Firstly organize your work. Create a New Folder where you are going to place your Text Effect, the Castle MF stock Font and both stock textures you are going to download. Then open your Adobe Photoshop and go to File, New to create a new .psd document. Name the new file Ancient Text. Insert 1200 Pixels for Width and 700 Pixels for Height. Insert also 72 or 96 Pixels/Inch for Resolution and select RGB for Color Mode. I have chosen Transparent for Background Contents. Those of you who would like to print the Ancient Text, should set the Resolution to 300 Pixels/Inch and select CMYK for Color Mode.
If you have chosen Transparent for Background Contents just like me, after you press OK button, you’ll see transparent Layer 1 in your Layers panel.
Double click on Layer 1 name and write Radial Gradient in the white space to rename the layer. Press Ctrl+G to place this first layer in a Group and call the newly created Group Background.

STEP_1

STEP 2

Keep Radial Gradient layer highlighted. Navigate to the Tools bar then click once on Set Foreground Color swatch. In the Color Picker box change the Foreground color to #6c4011. After that click on Set Background Color swatch and change the Background Color to #020201.

Now press G key or select Gradient Tool and have a look at the Options bar. Firstly select Foreground to Background Gradient from the Gradient Picker and click on Radial Gradient type. Drag with the Gradient tool by holding down left mouse key from the middle to any corner of the canvas. Your Background should look like this:

STEP_2

STEP 3

Click on this Tree Trunk stock Texture which is my photo to open it in high resolution, then right click and select Save As. Place it in the folder where you created the Ancient Text Effect .psd file. We’ll start working with this Texture in the next step to beautify our Background.

STEP_3

STEP 4

Create a New Layer above Radial Gradient layer in Background Group. Name it Tree Trunk Texture. Keep this new layer highlighted!
Open in Adobe Photoshop the Tree Trunk Texture you already downloaded in Step 3. Firstly press Ctrl+A to load selection on the whole Texture image then press Ctrl+C to copy it. Go back to your Ancient Text file and press Ctrl+V to paste the Texture in Tree Trunk Texture layer. You’ll see that the Texture image is a bit bigger than your canvas, so go to Edit, Free Transform and drag the nodes vertically and horizontally in order to resize the texture so that it covers your canvas. Press Enter to apply the Transformation.

STEP_4

STEP 5

Change Blend Mode of Tree Trunk Texture layer to Overlay and you’ll get this awesome Background:

STEP_5

STEP 6

Now we’ll start creating the Text Effect itself. Firstly download Black Castle MF Font by Rick Mueller from here: http://www.1001freefonts.com/black_castle_mf.font.
Install this Black Castle MF Font then grab Horizontal Type tool from the Tools bar (hot key T). From the Font Family drop down menu choose the newly installed Font and Set its Font Size to 160pt. Change the Text Color to #c5b069 then type Ancient in Capital Letters.
And there is something optional- after I typed the Text, I highlighted it then clicked on Toggle the Character and Paragraph Panels icon in the Options bar and Set the Tracking for the Selected Characters to 100. I think the Text looks better when the letters are not too close to one another.

STEP_6

STEP 7

Right click on Ancient Text layer and select Blending Options (Layer, Layer Style, Blending Options). Now we are going to apply five layer styles to the Text layer. Firstly check Drop Shadow and change its settings as follows:

Blend Mode: Multiply
Color of Shadow: #000000 (black)
Opacity: 75%
Angle: 120 degrees
Use Global Light: checked
Distance: 0px
Spread: 50%
Size: 10px
Contour: Linear
Anti-aliased: unchecked
Noise: 0%
Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow: checked.

Keep Layer Style dialog box opened.

STEP_7

STEP 8

Let us add spotty texture to our Ancient Text. Tick Pattern Overlay in Layer Style box and insert the following settings:

Blend Mode: Overlay
Opacity: 100%
Pattern: Hard Charcoal light (200 by 200 pixels, RGB mode)
Scale: 295%
Link with Layer: checked.

STEP_8

STEP 9

Now we are going to add custom Gradient to our Ancient Text so tick Gradient Overlay Layer Style and apply these settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply
Dither: unchecked
Opacity: 100%

Click to Edit the Gradient like this:
First Color Stop (Location 0%): #544807
Second Color Stop (Location 25%): #7f5d42
Third Color Stop (Location 100%): #d1c10b

Reverse: unchecked
Style: Linear type of gradient
Align with Layer: checked
Angle: 90 degrees
Scale: 100%.

STEP_9

STEP 10

In order to add 3D effect, check Bevel and Emboss and modify the settings like this:

Style: Inner Bevel
Technique: Smooth
Depth: 1000%
Direction: Up
Size: 13px
Soften: 0px
Angle: 120 degrees
Use Global Light: checked
Altitude: 30 degrees
Gloss Contour: Linear
Anti-aliased: not checked
Highlight Mode: Overlay
Color for Highlight: #f8da0f
Opacity: 100%
Shadow Mode: Multiply
Color of Shadow: #000000
Opacity: 50%.

STEP_10

STEP 11

The last Layer Style to be added to Ancient Text layer is Contour. Modify it like this:

Contour: Log
Anti-aliased: checked
Range: 100%.

Now press OK button to apply the Blending Options and to close Layer Style dialog box.

STEP_11

This is how your first Text layer will look after adding all previous layer styles:

STEP_11-1

STEP 12

While Ancient Text layer is selected press Ctrl+J (Layer, Duplicate Layer) to make a copy of it.
Now we have to get rid of the Blending Options which were duplicated together with the layer. For the purpose right click on Ancient copy layer and select Clear Layer Style. You can do the same by moving the fx icon to the right of the layer to the recycle bin symbol at the bottom of Layers panel.
Lower Fill Opacity of Ancient copy layer to 0%.

STEP_12

STEP 13

We are going to add only 3D effect to Ancient copy layer. Firstly apply this Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Inner Bevel
Technique: Smooth
Depth: 511%
Direction: Up
Size: 13px
Soften: 0px
Angle: 120 degrees
Use Global Light: checked
Altitude: 30 degrees
Gloss Contour: Cone
Anti-aliased: not checked
Highlight Mode: Overlay
Color for Highlight: #f7c76b
Opacity: 100%
Shadow Mode: Multiply
Color of Shadow: #000000
Opacity: 0%.

Still don’t close Layer Style box as we have to add Contour.

STEP_13

STEP 14

Check Contour Layer Style which is below Bevel and Emboss and change it like this:

Contour: Guassian-Inverse
Anti-aliased: checked
Range: 100%.

Now you can close Layer Style box.

STEP_14

This is the result of adding Bevel and Emboss and Contour to Ancient copy layer:

STEP_14-1

STEP 15

Now click on this cool Lichen texture then right click and select Save As to download it. This Texture, as the previous one is my photo and unrestricted stock.

STEP_15

STEP 16

Create a new layer on top of Text Group and rename it to Lichen Texture. Copy and paste the Texture you already downloaded in the previous step the apply Edit, Free Transform to resize the Lichen Texture so that it covers the Text only, not the whole image. Press Enter key.

STEP_16

STEP 17

Change the Blend Mode of Lichen Texture layer to Multiply.

STEP_17

STEP 18

Now press Ctrl and click on any of both Ancient Text layer’s thumbnail to Load Selection (Select, Load Selection).

STEP_18

STEP 19

Check if Lichen Texture layer is highlighted and while the previously loaded Selection is still active, go to Layer, Layer Mask and choose Reveal Selection.

STEP_19

STEP 20

You’ll get the result shown on the screenshot below after masking the lichen Texture layer. Keep the Layer Mask thumbnail selected as in the coming steps we are going to work in the Mask. As you can see, after adding the Mask, Foreground/Background colors changed automatically to Black/White.

STEP_20

STEP 21

Take Brush Tool, from the Brush Preset Picker in the Options bar choose Soft Round Brush then set its Size to 35px. Start brushing on the Text while the layer Mask thumbnail is selected (make sure that your Foreground color is Black). Thus you’ll remove some parts of the Lichen Texture. See the result on the screenshot below:

STEP_21

STEP 22

Now double click on Lichen Texture layer’s thumbnail to activate Layer Style dialog box. At first tick Bevel and Emboss and insert the following settings:

Style: Inner Bevel
Technique: Smooth
Depth: 96%
Direction: Up
Size: 1px
Soften: 0px
Angle: 120 degrees
Use Global Light: checked
Altitude: 30 degrees
Gloss Contour: Notched Slope
Anti-aliased: not checked
Highlight Mode: Screen
Color for Highlight: #a36d19
Opacity: 100%
Shadow Mode: Multiply
Color of Shadow: #000000
Opacity: 75%.

Don’t close Layer Style dialog box yet as we are going to add Contour in the coming step.

STEP_22

STEP 23

Now apply this Contour Layer Style:

Contour: Gove-Deep
Anti-aliased: not checked
Range: 100%.

Press OK button to apply the 3D effect and to close Layer Style dialog box. We won’t add more Blending Options in this tutorial. 🙂

STEP_23

Step 23-1

You should get this result after applying Bevel and Emboss and Contour on the parts of the Texture.

STEP_23-1

STEP 24

Our work on the Ancient Text Effect is finished. If you have performed all my previous twenty three steps in detail, you should get the similar result. Compare also your Layers panel with mine. As you can see, there are two groups of layers in it:

1. Background Group which contains two layers: Radial Gradient and Tree Trunk Texture and
2. Text Group which includes three layers: Ancient and Ancient copy Text layers and Lichen Texture layer.

STEP_24

STEP 25

This is the outcome saved in .jpg format. I have applied Filter, Sharpen, Unsharp Mask for a better result.
Hope you liked this easy to follow tutorial and learned a really effective method to create ancient and medieval style texts. Thanks a lot for reading! 🙂
