5 Medical Technology Breakthroughs to Expect in 2018

The world of medical technology evolves fast. It is not strange therefore for people to see new breakthroughs in this branch of medical science from time to time.

Just a few years back, nobody never really imagined that less invasive surgery was possible especially in treating difficult cases such as stroke and heart diseases. But thanks to medical technology for making these unimaginable things come into place. It has made possible the treatment of diseases quickly and safely by way of intravenous microsurgery – a type of modern medical treatment that was once considered impossible. Now it can be done now within hours allowing patients to leave the hospital in a few days.

Here are the 2018 medical technology breakthroughs with the best game-changing potentials to offer:

1. Wideband Medical Radar

A conventional mammogram requires patients to stand while their breasts are compressed in an X-ray machine. This painful, expensive and potentially hazardous procedure is slowly becoming a thing of the past with the invention of the medical radar.

This innovative instrument is designed for imaging breast cancers. It uses radio waves instead of radiation. Moreover, this technology is fast and easy to use. The entire process is completed within a minute with the patient lying comfortably on the table. The most interesting part about this technology is its cost. It is only about 10% of the cost of a conventional digital breast X-ray procedure which can be as high as $250,000.

2. 3D Bioprinting of Human Tissue

This technology was thought to be unrealistic only a few years back. It is hard to imagine creating a fully functional kidney from the very cells of a patient. This is an ongoing project in medical science and technology and we are advancing towards that direction. Who knows?

3. Smart Probe/Smart Scalpel

Smart probes and smart scalpels are a technology designed to target specific tissues including cancerous, nerve or vascular tissues. They are intended specifically for microsurgical procedures such as anastomosis of blood vessels, repair or removal of cerebral aneurysms, resection of brain tumor and removal of acoustic neuroma.

Smart Scalpel was developed at Sandia. It is based on the same principle doctors apply for detecting cancer cells as they cut away abnormal growths concealed by blood, fat or muscle. This technology is specifically intended to remove malignant growth and prevent or minimize the removal of healthy tissues.

4. Electromagnetic Acoustic Imaging

This technology is still at its early stages of development. Electromagnetic Acoustic Imaging or EMAI is a combination of bioelectromagnetism and acoustics which results in an ultrasound device that’s safer than computed tomography or CT scan. It is capable of producing near MRI quality images and gives physicians the ability to identify malignant and benign lesions. EMAI is way cheaper than known sophisticated systems including magnetic resonance imaging or positron emission tomography.

5. Nanobot Treatment for Stroke

Stroke refers to the blockage of a blood vessel that supplies the brain with fresh oxygenated blood. Brain cells die when the brain is deprived of oxygen for a long time, causing death or long-term disability. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.

Nanotherapeutics is a new technology designed to treat diseases on a molecular level. Nanobots are now utilized in the treatment of cancer. They are now considered possible tools for breaking up stroke-causing blood and accurately delivering drugs that can reverse the effects of stroke.

Nanobots are not only intended for saving lives; they also carry potentials for effectively reducing treatment costs.

These are just five of the most promising innovations of medical technology. They are actually one of the most popular topics of medical equipment blog sites today. As we all know, medical science and technology work hand-in-hand in the battle against sickness.

There are far more developments that are being undertaken and when they do come out, we can only marvel at the brilliance of the men and women behind them.
